Early Morning Workout Routine of Mom with Two Kids

This week I’m sharing with you tips for creating a consistent workout routine from a mom of a 4 and 5 year old. She has been a long time reader and member of This Routine Life community. When we met, she shared that she woke up at 4am every morning (even with young kids), to leave the house and make a 5am workout class. I was so impressed with her discipline.

Throughout the years, she’s stayed consistent with her 5am workouts. I often see her giving it her all during her workout class, on her Instagram stories.

I reached out to her and asked if she would mind giving you some insight into her workout routine, specifically how she wakes up early, and how she’s maintained this schedule over time.

You’ll find my interview, and her answers, below.

(Over the next few weeks, I’m sharing routines/self-care habits from members of the This Routine Life community If you’re interested in sharing, you can fill out this form here.)

When and how did you start waking up early to workout?

I have been working out consistently at 5am since 2023. After having my 2nd daughter, I didn’t have a consistent workout time. I was going at different times, but I was invited to a 5am workout class and haven’t looked back since! Every day isn’t easy, but in my opinion, preparing the night before is the biggest step!

How do you wake up early consistently to workout?

Working out has truly become a form of self-care for me and going at 5am allows me to only worry about myself. Rarely does anything come up at 5am 🙂

What type of exercise do you take part in and how often?

I workout 5-6 days a week with a focus on strength training, but some of the workouts are cardio based also.

How is your life different because you make time to workout?

I have more confidence because I have seen the physical changes that my body has gone through after having two kids back to back. It took awhile for me to figure out my routine, but when I finally accepted that early mornings work best for me, it was a game changer.

How do you treat yourself if you miss a day or sleep in?

I don’t beat myself up for sleeping in. If I feel really sore or just tired in general, I will allow myself to sleep in, but because I am disciplined with working out, I know that missing a day is not a big deal.

Why do you think you’ve been so consistent?

Seeing the physical changes in my body and also having a community of women that I work out with every morning who will check in if I’m not there. Also noticing how much stronger I am!

What does your morning routine look like?

When my alarm goes off, I read the Bible verse of the day and then I get ready for the gym. I have my clothes, shoes, and socks already laid out. I usually pray in the shower after I’m back at home, get dressed, and then I wake my daughters up and get them dressed. My husband does drop off in the morning. I login to work from home around 7am.

What time do you go to bed? And how do you make sure you get enough sleep?

I am usually asleep by 10pm at the latest, and my alarm is set for 4:15am. My phone is set to Do Not Disturb from 9pm-5am.

What’s been the biggest factor in making exercise a habit?

I wanted to be physically stronger and a positive influence for my daughters so that they will know that being active is very important to a healthy life.

What advice do you have to give to a mom who wants to start making time for herself in the morning (whether to workout or do something else), but is struggling to make it happen?

Making time for yourself is WORTH IT! We have so many responsibilities and the days can be busy, but carving the time out in the morning has been the best feeling to me!
