2025 Summer Morning Routine

If you’ve been around for a while, you know I believe that a good morning routine is life-changing. It’s the difference between starting the day on your terms, or letting the day start you.

Your morning routine doesn’t have to be complex to reap the benefits. It can be as simple as waking up 20 minutes before your kids and having a cup of coffee while you read – this is actually the exact morning routine I followed consistently when my kids were toddlers.

Through out the years, as my kids have grown, my morning routine has evolved also. Now I wake up super early and get a lot done before I head into the day.

However, in years past, summertime has derailed my morning routine.

I slowly start sleeping in a little more, missing my workouts, and then missing the time to myself. When this happens, it has a direct impact on my mood (I’m frustrated that I start the day feeling behind on life), and my productivity (I literally lose a few hours when I have the most energy to get things done). The more I slept through my morning routine, the harder it was to get out of the rut, so I would just keep sleeping in even though I really didn’t want to. Sound familiar?

Last year, I made an intentional effort to stick with my morning routine. I didn’t want to get into the funk I found myself in in years past. I decided I would wake up at 5am (versus the 4am during the school year). As much as I would like to go to bed early no matter what time of year it is, I had to be realistic knowing my family would be staying up later.

This ended up working really well. Last summer was one of the first summers in a long time that I really enjoyed. I know this was because I felt like I was spending my time intentionally starting with my morning routine.

It only made sense that I would do the same thing this year. I spent about 25 minutes yesterday and created my summer morning routine. This morning was the first time I followed it, and even though it wasn’t perfect, it was manageable, and I accomplished what I set out to accomplish.

So today I’m sharing with you my 2025 summer morning routine. I’ll also share other resources if you want to start (or reignite) your morning routine.

My 2025 Summer Morning Routine

Starting at 4:30am, my alarm goes off. I aim to get out of bed by 5am, this is when my morning routine starts, and it lasts until around 9am.

I usually designate times for different tasks/habits during my routine. But since it’s the summer, I’m going to give myself some flexibility. Instead of having times to accomplish everything, I’m going to write out everything I want to accomplish in my routine (kind of like a to-do list for the morning):

Workout

I keep my workout clothes next to my bed so once I wake up, I grab them and head into the bedroom to change. Then I head down to the kitchen to drink some water and I workout. I have a goal to work out for a minimum of 20 minutes a day starting June 1st, and so far I’ve been able to stick to this!

Take short daily walk, quick maintenance of landscaping/yard

One of my goals for 2025 is to take a 5-10 minute walk outside every day. So far, I’m meeting this goal (today is actually my 188th walk of the year!). I’m going to try to take this walk right after I workout, but if that doesn’t work, I have this time set aside.

Work for one hour for This Routine Life

My goal is to make this time ONLY for marketing projects that help grow Kristen Mattison Coaching + This Routine Life. These are the projects that tend to get pushed to the side because it’s so easy to just focus on the day-to-day tasks. However, these are projects that will have a big impact on my growth.

Fill out planners/habit trackers/journal/read

This is the time I take to fill out my habit tracker, look at plans for the day, read my yearly goals and write about them, journal, and then read if I have time. This is my favorite part of the morning.

Get kids breakfast/cleaning chore

Depending on when the kids get up, I’ll make them breakfast and I’ll complete a few cleaning chores OR I’ll complete this after I get ready (I don’t spend more than 20 minutes a day on this).

If I do my hair, this could take up to 45 minutes. But if I’m having a “no wash” hair day, I take about 20-30 minutes to get ready. Once I’m done getting ready, I’ll do my cleaning chores (if I have the time and haven’t done them already), and start a load of laundry that I’ll switch out throughout the day. Then we are out the door!

Use a Morning Routine Checklist

Since this is a new routine for me, I’m writing it out on my “Morning Routine Checklist”. You can get your own free “Morning Routine Checklist” (plus one for your kids) by clicking here!

I highly encourage you to write out any new routine/schedule that you’re trying to follow. This eliminates having to spend precious mental energy trying to remember what you wanted to do and when. With a checklist, you just look at it and follow along!
